Lewis's The Chronicles of Narnia, but Coraline remained too simple and too dark throughout. It clumsily follows on the heals of the rereleases of C.S. It felt like the story wanted to be a more complex adult novel or a children's book with more illustrations. At least the style and language of the story were clear. The characters were dark as was the whole story wrapped within a story plot, but the ending was anticlimatic. Coraline is little like Van Allsburg's books like The Garden of Abdul Gasazi or The Mysteries of Harris Burdick but it isn't as inspired. I know people raved about Neil Gaimon's Coraline (especially people who loved the Sandman series-which I do like), but I didn't like it.
